Review
Doulton Kingfisher review: cost, fit and certification
The Kingfisher’s main strength is independently listed filtration, with a single cartridge to maintain. NSF names this exact system with Biotect Ultra for chlorine taste and odour, particulates, cysts, lead and turbidity. It costs more upfront than the budget kits.[1][2]

The catch is price. The system is £254.95 and the tap is extra, so £299.90 with Doulton’s pillar tap, before fitting. With cartridges that becomes £564.95 over five years, and the listed claims do not include hardness, so it is not a limescale answer.
Who it suits
- want to check a filter’s claims against an independent registry
- are happy to add a pillar tap and have a hole for it
- prefer a one-off £29.45 cartridge twice a year, with no subscription
Who should look elsewhere
- want one price that includes the tap
- mainly want to deal with limescale
- haven’t checked the clearance under your sink: Doulton’s page labels the dimensions inconsistently, so use the installation drawing
What the NSF listing tells you, and what it doesn’t
The registry names this exact system and cartridge: standard 42 for the aesthetic claims (chlorine taste and odour, particulates) and standard 53 for cysts, lead and turbidity.[1][2]
Read it narrowly. Standard 372 relates to lead in the materials, not to lead removal. Nothing in the listing covers hardness. And it names this combination only: do not carry it across to other Doulton systems or cartridges, including the HIP DUO.
The price once the tap is counted
Doulton sells the Kingfisher without a tap, so the £254.95 headline is not comparable with kits that include one.[3] Our comparison adds the £44.95 pillar tap to reach £299.90.[4] Doulton’s three-way mixer tap, £199.95, is compatible with this system if you want hot, cold and filtered water from one fitting.[5] Fitting is extra in every case.
| Configuration | Parts | Total |
|---|---|---|
| System only, no tap | Kingfisher system with cartridge and installation kit £254.95[3] | £254.95 |
| With pillar tap | Kingfisher system with cartridge and installation kit £254.95[3] Pillar tap £44.95[4] | £299.90 |
| With three-way mixer tap | Kingfisher system with cartridge and installation kit £254.95[3] Three-way mixer tap £199.95[5] | £454.90 |
Running costs over one, three and five years
Doulton’s FAQ says to change the Biotect Ultra 2501 every six months, and the instructions give 2,300 litres.[6][7] At our eight litres a day assumption the litre rating would last about nine months, so the six-month limit is the one that applies. The cartridge fitted at purchase is included in the price, and each change is £29.45.
| Case | 1 year | 3 years | 5 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| With tap | £329.35 | £447.15 | £564.95 |
Same sums and assumptions as the comparison: 8 litres a day, the cartridge fitted at purchase included, no fitting, adaptors or water.
Published owner feedback
Feedback published on this exact product (Trustpilot, August 2026) praises the build and materials, and one owner, happy after a few days, wanted a black pillar tap and bought one elsewhere. That is a tiny, early-use sample: it says nothing about long-term flow, reliability or filtration.[8]
Fitting
Doulton recommends 2 bar and gives a maximum filter flow of 1.9 litres a minute, so compare that with the tap you plan to use.[3][7] The pillar tap needs a hole of its own: if you cannot drill, read fitting without drilling and the filter taps page first.
Cartridges and care
The Kingfisher takes the Biotect Ultra 2501 and the Ultra SI 2505, and not the Ultracarb 9501, 9505 or M15 or the gravity 8674.[9] The cartridge page sets out what fits what, and the care guide explains the flush and cleaning rules.
Alternatives
- Doulton HIP DUO with Biotect Ultra review (in the comparison): Takes the same cartridge and adds a second stage, but its running cost is far higher and this listing does not carry over.
- Aquaphor Crystal Solo review (in the comparison): Includes a tap and costs £79.99, but its claims are the maker’s own.
- Waterdrop WD-10UA review (in the comparison): A lower-cost direct-connect option intended for your existing cold-water tap; its UK performance claims need separate checks.

Common questions
Does the Kingfisher come with a tap?
No. A pillar tap is £44.95 extra, or a three-way mixer tap £199.95. Our totals add the pillar tap.
Does the NSF listing cover the HIP DUO?
No. The listing names the Kingfisher with the Biotect Ultra, and Doulton says the Biotect was tested in a different housing from the DUO.
Will it reduce limescale?
The listed claims do not include hardness. See hard water and limescale.
