Shower filters UK: filtered heads, inline filters and hard water
A filtered shower head swaps out the head you have; an inline shower filter attaches at the shower outlet before your existing hose or head. Compare one of each, the Doulton Shower Head with Filter and the Hello Klean Shower Filter 2.0, on price, replacement cost, pressure limits and what they do and don’t do for hard water.

Both reduce chlorine according to their makers, and neither claims to soften water. They differ in what you buy: Doulton gives you a new shower head with filters inside, while Hello Klean gives you a filter unit that fits to the head you already own. We have not tested either.

Specifications and fitting details
- Maker’s claim
- Reduces chlorine and sediment; Doulton’s manual says the chlorine and particle results are in-house tested. We found no independent certificate for this head.[1][2]
- Capacity
- 8,000 litres, which Doulton puts at about two months for a family of four, depending on your water.[1][2]
- Pressure and temperature
- Operating pressure 0.5 to 5.5 bar and water between 5 and 50 °C. Above 5.5 bar Doulton recommends a pressure regulator before the head.[2]
- Electric showers and boilers
- Doulton says to check your appliance manual for its minimum flow, and to keep the filters clean so flow is not restricted.[2]
- Hose connection
- Doulton says the head attaches to your existing hose. We found no thread size on the page or in the manual, so confirm your hose end before ordering.[1][2]
- Warranty
- Twelve months against defects in materials, workmanship or design, per the manual.[2]
Think twice if you want to keep a rain shower or fixed head you already like, or have an electric shower or boiler without checking its minimum flow, or expect it to soften water: neither the page nor the manual claims it does.

Specifications and fitting details
- Maker’s claim
- Treat Hello Klean’s reduction statements as the maker’s claims. It links a lab report, but we have not confirmed that the report covers this exact 2.0 model, so we quote no percentages and no certificate.[3]
- Optional refill plan
- £44.00 upfront with £36.00 refills every three months. This is a subscription; the £55.00 comparison price is a one-off purchase.[3]
- Hard water
- Hello Klean says calcium and magnesium stay in the water and hardness is unchanged.[3]
- Connection
- Hello Klean says it suits standard G1/2 fittings and to check non-standard installations.[3]
- Electric showers
- Hello Klean says electric heaters vary in flow requirements and to check your appliance maker. We found no pressure or temperature limits to quote.[3]
- Refill
- The refill capsule fits Shower Filter 2.0 and the Rain Shower, not the handheld Shower Head 2.0 or Plus, and Hello Klean also sells an older 1.0 generation, so match the capsule to your generation. £40.00 one-off or £36.00 on subscription. The product copy says three to four months and the FAQ says three, so we plan on three.[4][3]
Think twice if you want a new head and filter in one purchase, or need a stated pressure and temperature range before you buy, or want an independent certificate for this exact model.

Shower filters and hard water
These two shower filters do not reduce water hardness. Hardness is calcium and magnesium dissolved in the water, and it is what leaves limescale on shower screens, taps and heads. Chlorine is a different thing, added to mains water to disinfect it. Reducing chlorine does not reduce hardness.
Doulton’s page and manual claim chlorine and sediment reduction and make no hardness claim. Hello Klean goes further and says calcium and magnesium stay in the water, so hardness is unchanged. If scale is your problem, a softener fitted by an installer treats the outlets connected to it, with an unsoftened drinking-water supply retained, and our guide to hard water and limescale explains how that differs from a filter at one outlet.
Replacement head, inline filter and softener, shown as a concept
Filtered shower head
- Tap or mixer
- Your hose
- Filtered head (replaces your head)
Inline shower filter
- Shower outlet
- Inline filter
- Your existing hose or fixed head
Softener
- Mains supply
- Softener on selected supply
- Connected outlets only
Conceptual diagram, not an installation drawing. A filtered shower head replaces the head at the end of a hose. Hello Klean’s inline filter attaches at the wall outlet before the hose or existing fixed head. A softener treats the outlets connected to it, with a separate unsoftened drinking-water supply retained.
A concept sketch of where each kind of product sits. It is not an installation drawing: follow the maker’s instructions for your own fitting.
Inline shower filter or filtered shower head?
Choose an inline unit to keep your current shower head, or a filtered head to replace it. Check the connection and the room around it before ordering.
- You like your current shower headAn inline filter keeps it. The Hello Klean unit works this way, and you replace only its capsule.
- You are happy to change the head tooA filtered head, such as the Doulton, is one purchase and one fitting. You replace its filters, not the head.
- You mainly want less scaleLook at softening instead. Neither product here claims it. Do filters remove limescale?
The Doulton is not an inline filter. It is a handheld head with one filter in the handle and another in the head, so the swap-over is the whole head. Hello Klean’s inline unit attaches at the wall outlet before the hose or fixed head. Allow room for the unit and follow its fitting guide; it is not fitted inside the hose.
What they cost to keep going
The price of the shower filter is only the start, because both need regular replacements. This table uses each maker’s own interval and the replacement price we recorded. Your own interval depends on how much you shower and on your water, so treat it as a planning figure.
| Item | Doulton Shower Head with Filter | Hello Klean Shower Filter 2.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront | £24.95 for the head[1] | £55.00 one-off; £44.00 on subscription[3] |
| Replacement price | £16.95 for a pack of two filters[5] | £40.00 for a capsule; £36.00 on subscription[4] |
| Change interval used | Two months, the maker’s family-of-four estimate[1][5] | Three months, the more cautious of the maker’s figures[4][3] |
| Replacements in 12 months | Six changes[1] | Four changes[4] |
| Cost of those, one-off prices | £101.70 for six packs, assuming one pack per change; confirm the pack contents before relying on this budget[5][2] | £160.00; £144.00 on subscription[4] |
Doulton describes a pack of two filters, while its manual shows separate handle and head filter components. The pack is not confirmed to cover two complete changes, so the budget assumes one pack per change. These are ongoing annual replacement budgets, not first-year totals; actual changes depend on water use and the maker’s limits.
Checks before you order
- Hose end. Hello Klean says standard G1/2 fittings and to check non-standard ones. Doulton says the head attaches to your existing hose but gives no thread size, so check yours or ask Doulton before ordering.
- Pressure. Doulton gives 0.5 to 5.5 bar and recommends a pressure regulator above that. We found no pressure range for the Hello Klean unit.
- Temperature. Doulton’s head is for water between 5 and 50 °C. We found no temperature limit for the Hello Klean unit.
- Electric showers and boilers. Both makers tell you to check your appliance manual for its minimum flow. Filters restrict flow as they fill with sediment, so do not assume an electric shower will cope.
- Looking after it. Doulton’s manual says to clean the stainless steel plate with soapy water and avoid bleach, and to run the water for 10 to 20 seconds if the shower has been unused. After a filter change, it says to run unfiltered water for 10 to 20 seconds to wet the filters.
Skin, hair and the makers’ claims
Some shower-filter marketing talks about softer skin and hair. We are not repeating those claims as findings. Doulton’s own manual labels its chlorine and particle results as in-house tested, and Hello Klean links a lab report whose scope we have not confirmed for the 2.0 model. We have not established an independent certification or clinical outcome for either exact product.
What this page covers
Two products are compared here: a filtered handheld head and an inline unit, checked against the makers’ pages and instructions on 17 October 2026. This is not a ranking of every shower filter on sale in the UK. To compare others, use the same checks: format, replacement cost and interval, pressure and temperature limits, fitting, and whether the maker is claiming chlorine, sediment or hardness. How we check explains how we label claims.
Common questions
Does a shower filter help with hard water?
Not on the evidence we have. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium. Doulton claims chlorine and sediment reduction and makes no hardness claim, and Hello Klean says calcium and magnesium stay in the water. A water softener is the product built for hardness; see the limescale guide.
Is an inline shower filter better than a filtered shower head?
Neither is better in general. An inline filter lets you keep a shower head you like and swap only the capsule. A filtered head is one purchase that replaces your head. Check the hose thread and the space around the fitting for either.
Will a shower filter work on an electric shower?
Possibly, but both makers tell you to check the shower’s own manual for its minimum flow, because a filter can reduce flow as it clogs. Do not assume compatibility.
Do shower filters improve skin or hair?
The makers advertise skin and hair benefits, but Tap Sorted has not established those outcomes for either exact product. A chlorine-reduction claim alone does not establish a skin or hair benefit.
How often do shower filter cartridges need changing?
Doulton says about two months for a family of four, or 8,000 litres. Hello Klean says every three months, with some of its copy saying three to four. Both depend on how much you shower and on your water.
Are the black and white Doulton heads different?
Only in colour. They cost the same, share one manual and use the same replacement filters.
